COMMUNITY SAFETY & COMPLIANCE OFFICER

About the role:

Do you possess practical application knowledge and a good understanding of the regulatory and compliance environment? Are you looking to take the next step in your career in educating and enforcing legislative compliance? We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Regulatory Services team as a Community Safety & Compliance Officer. The primary focus of this role is to provide, in a professional manner, an efficient and effective regulatory and enforcement service to the community ensuring compliance that meets the provision of applicable Acts, regulations and other statutory requirements.

Duties include:

  • Work hours spread over seven (7) days, Monday to Sunday on a rotational roster, including after hours call outs and required public holidays.
  • Investigate, assess, determine and resolve customer service requests, enquiries and complaints in a timely customer focused and professional manner, in compliance with and meeting the provisions of applicable Acts, regulations & other statutory requirements.
  • Operate licence plate recognition vehicle
  • Conduct regular routine parking patrols of car parks, roads and school zones, issue infringement notices
  • Enforce the regulatory aspects of the Companion Animals Act and regulations with respect to complaints regarding nuisance animals, dog attacks and impounding activities, competently handle animals as required.
  • Issue notices/orders and penalty infringement notices pursuant to the Companion Animals Act and Regulations, carry out inspections for dangerous/menacing/nuisance dogs
  • Investigate and process abandoned motor vehicles in accordance to Impounding Act and relevant procedures
  • Enforce legislative requirements in relation to abandoned articles, unauthorised signs on Council roads/property, obstructions/encroachments on Council property
  • Conduct routine, litter, public spaces/Council reserves and Heavy Vehicle patrols
  • Investigate asset defects, reports of unauthorised development, property complaints, pollution and illegal dumping incidents and offences;
  • Monitor development, building and subdivision sites;
  • Provide technical compliance advice to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Prepare Statement of Basic Facts and Contentions and briefs of evidence in relation to compliance matters and attend Court as required;
  • Participate in community education programs across a range of enforcement activities to improve community safety and compliance
  • Detail, record information in an accurate and legible manner and able to write quality reports.

About you:

To be considered for this role you will have:

  1. Diploma/Certificate IV (Ranger) in Local Government or another relevant discipline or relevant 2 - 5 years industry experience;
  2. Experience in Court procedures, law enforcement or Local Government law enforcement procedures (2-5 years);
  3. Working knowledge and understanding of the Local Government Act, Companion Animals Act, Impounding Act & Australian Road Rules, Environmental Planning & Assessment Act, the Protection of the Environment Operations Act & other Acts/legislation;
  4. Demonstrated experience in dealing with customer with an ability to solve protracted enquiries (2-5 years);
  5. Ability to competently and effectively handle and control animals;
  6. Demonstrated competent computer literacy skills;
  7. Understanding & ability to interpret Local Government Act, Environmental Planning & Assessment Act, Protection of Environment Operations Act & all legislation, practices & Standards (1 - 2 years);
  8. Class C Motor Vehicle Licence.
